The Vatican lays claim to many lands legally. The ones you speak Israel and Gaza are both claimed as legal ownership of the Vatican state based on a deals done before WW1. The Vatican lays claim to it, but no one has worked out this deal yet. This claim is also a claim to the Temple mount and all.

To support this the Vatican is the only one who does not recognize Israel as a state, not to say less minor people do not recognize this as well. To do so would make their claims invalid. Which no pope has done, except in 1993 a order was made by the pope to dictate that they want Israel back. This might be a possible end to the violence, but can also mark a time in history that could escalate the violence.

What has stopped the Vatican is they have no real army to force their legal claim, but this one day may lead to a peace treaty ushered in by them, but it would never be a 2 state deal. If this is the truth about the true legal ownership then a 2 state deal is still invalid as well as the worlds decree Israel is a state too.

As for the science and religion thing, this ties back to the Vatican again.. as they were the suppressing force against such things for some time and why dogma holds a name. The people of old were just doing what they were told, except for a few. well we saw the death of those few very fast in old time history. The Vatican killed anyone who challenged them until the French striped them of their power. Not afraid that the pope won't forgive them of their sins, they killed the pope. Effectively blowing their power out of the water, since it is weakened by this act of history. Wait til they decide to reclaim power that once was its. Even though this act of killing the pope was just a wound to the church, it will one day recover from this wound that almost killed that church. Then they might set lay to their old claims. Then it will be irrelevant for any deals as they will set it straight, prob by deceptions.

Israel creating Hamas and living in perpetual war, as Jackwagen mentioned, is absurd, I don't see why they would waste time fighting against a small terrorist cell and maintaining Gaza and the West Bank regardless of Sovereignty. Also, another interesting fact about the temple mount, the dome of the rock is actually placed in a court called the court of the gentiles. this court was not used by the main temple or "Solomon's" temple area. So the dome and a new temple could be placed side by side without the destruction of the other. so for those that think one would have to destroy the dome of the rock to build a new temple could be flawed.
