That's why traditionally we have downsized our military after every war. That's why we don'd understand realities in other countries. We don't even really understand race relations in our country. We ignore our own history while trying to preach our ideals to the world.

Oster - we may quibble about the exact amounts, but your premise about non-renewable resources is sound. We will eventually run out of those materials, and they will be replaced by other sources. Still, they have their attractions. Oil is simply the best cost to benefit energy source we have. Coal is cheap and, for the moment, plentiful.

Why are the corporations that exploit such resources short-sighted? Here's a quote from an old text :

As far as discussing politics or economics.... those subjects are just as contentious as race or religion. None of these four areas have any concrete reality that can be argued. Only opinions...indeed, proponents of the same general school of thought can not even agree of the tenets of the subject. By all means, start a discussion. But it's going to go wonky fast.

Johanas, it is the right that constantly propagates the need for controlling the world. From Nixon to Reagan to Bush. You can clearly see the right doesn't practice what they preach. In Texas, you can't even pick your own power or electric companies while in liberal states you can. So much for free trade there. But Republicans bitch and moan that they're conservative. Then, it's even more laughable when Texas has stricter gun laws than PA which is a Democrat state.

Universities are not compelled or obligated to respect free speech, and nor are businesses or any other private organizations for that matter. Don't like it? Too bad. Let's break it down a bit. Gay marriage, that was when states decided to actually word it to BAN same sex marriage. That's actually controlling the social norms. Repealing it or having the Supreme Court invalidating it means less social control.

As for abortion, that's leaving the decision up to the person who's body is for theirs to do with. Also, many abortions before it was legalized were never punished, as you couldn't tell the difference between an abortion and a miscarriage.

Please show me a source where states can legally attack churches for denying gay weddings. In the past we couldn't tell the difference between some toxicological effects and a heart attack. The fact that we did not punish the bystanders of all folks who had heart attacks is immaterial.

Roe v Wade is the law of the land. That's actually controlling the social norms. And that's what legislation and the judicial review of oversight on that process is all about. Arguing about social control on one side or the other of this argument is irrelevant - the practice of controlling social norms is politics and government.

I find all this extremely entertaining for several reasons.
1) I find it funny that most people feel that if you don't agree with their world view they you have a mental problem, espeically when it come to politics. As if anyone ever took that as science.
2) I find it funny that anyone worries about what Donald Trump said during the primaries. Let me explain in two words: FREE MEDIA. It got his name on the news just about every night which was better coverage than buying adds.
3) Besides, it not like any politician actually has done what he said he was going to do before he got in office. Except for Obamacare and if you think that is a success you haven't been reading about insurance companies fleeing it as fast as they can.
4) Parliaments are different then republics (American is a republic- we send representatives - not a democracy where everyone votes on everything i.e. ancient Greece). A Parliament can disolve the exiting government at any time or fail to form one. See Italy and Belgium on how well that worked.
4)Neo Nazis, in my opinion, are a response to nervous uncertainty by individuals who are normally poor and without hope. These are exactly the types who formed the first Nazi party. There have always been extremists the big difference now is that they get instant news coverage and their own Facebook page. Regretfully people like that thrive on that sort of thing and it encourages them to do more. Seems to me to be more about attention than anything.

If we've got Trolls here, all we need now is Thor to come here as well and battle the Trolls then we can Marvel at the Universe instead......

To return to the topic originally introduced, race. I recently read a novel by Greg Iles, The Quiet Game. And I think he hit it on the head.
To paraphrase:
We tend to look at blacks as just another immigrant population. One that can't get it's act together. The Jews, the Irish, Poles, Italians etc. all came to this country and do not experience the problems blacks do. Only one other race group experiences similar types of problems - Native Americans.

The Native Americans had their land stolen out from underneath them, and their culture systematically destroyed. The Blacks were stolen from their land, and had their culture systematically destroyed.

Culture has a stabilizing influence. Until these groups come up with a unifying culture, we will continue to see poverty, alcoholism and drug addiction, high crime etc.


I am not a left wing apologist blaming all social ills on the government. I do, however, recognize the original root cause.

Here is my take on what is going on in America. :-)

The people in America have changed. We've gone from a society where the peoples earned their livings with hard work and the ability to seize the American Dream - in control of their livelihoods and futures to those who want something for nothing, therefore being taken care of by the government. What people have to realize, getting something for free DOES come with a price.

I stand in amazement at the young people who want a free college education. Well, I wasn't afforded a free college education, nor my brother. Our parents sacrificed to pay the higher costs of education so that my brother and I could attend private schools and obtain a degree before entering the work force. We also worked and contributed to that goal. My dad worked three jobs. So my thoughts are, if you want it, you work for it. As parents, you prepare for it. You do without the half million dollar homes and BMWs! You make sacrifices. You send your children to school.

As for the black Americans, so many of them have the "victim" mindset that they are "owed" for what happened to their ancestors with slavery. What they don't realize is their mindset still keeps them in a state of slavery. Today, every black American should recognize that as an American you can be anything you want to be, but you have to work for it. There are so many though, who don't aspire to that.........I mean why? The Democrats will cut them a check. They should be helped and encouraged that they are worthy of so much more. There are many successful black Americans who have lifted themselves from that mindset. Look at Ben Carson. The man is brilliant. The Democratic party although on the surface looks great to Black Americans by doling out checks are really limiting many from knowing that they are capable of much much more. They (democratic party) have the control, they keep the impoverished Black Americans, right where they want them.

I see so many of my Black American friends, many whom are my role models here at my office, that have worked hard and made successes of their lives. They have motivation and drive. Every American - black, white, Asian, Muslim, have that ability.

Communities need to take care of each other, help each other, and become less reliant on the government for their well being and needs. And OMG - don't even get me started on the whole health care issue!!!

Futhermore, America was founded under God. We have our constitution and the principles upon which we stand as a nation. We were founded to be a free and independent nation.

Where are we now? Well, I can't even talk about my God at work. I can't say Merry Christmas. Schools, you can't even recite the Pledge of Allegiance. They have removed God from schools and from public buildings. Can't have Christmas trees anymore, they have to be holiday trees. Ugh! Need I go on???? People are way too easily offended.

Come on, if you come to America, you can practice your religious freedom, but don't come changing our ways, our beliefs, our rights. But this is happening.

The movement over the last several decades has been moving the USA from a free and independent nation to one with less freedoms and more globalized with the rest of the world.

Hillary Clinton is one of the most corrupt people - her and her husband and foundation. They sell our country out for money from other countries. Doesn't matter if they are terrorist-supporting countries or what. It is about power, money, greed, corruption. Aaaaaaaaaaah but what is money? Yes, money is the root of all evil. That is what they represent - EVIL.

I guess that America somewhere along the way has lost its moral compass that its people could even back such a dishonest and corrupt individual to the highest position of our land. What happened to the days when someone's honor and integrity counted for something?

I am proudly going to support Donald Trump for the American presidency. He was not my choice as the republican nominee. However, his policies, the direction of where the country needs to go are more in line with my opinions for the success of our great nation. I want my freedom, my independence, my religious freedom. I want a leader with backbone and not the wimp that Obama has been, that Hillary will continue to be.

I will say this. I will do my part to make America great again. If you choose to go the current path, and our great nation falls, and it will. You have yourselves to blame. I am so NEVER Hillary Clinton, I would vote for my cat as president over Hillary Clinton. Surely Trump can do better than my cat. lol

I'm assuming your much older, in which case, I have to say your generation ruined the Social Security for us younger generations. We're not going to be able to have the same luxury of social security while you guys work on our backs and take advantage of the social security that will be gutted for us. Perhaps you shouldn't be talking. Your political decisions left this country in a worse state than you will soon leave with us, and it's us getting the shaft for it. The whole post has been "Stop relying on the government" while you DO rely on the government. America lost it's moral compass while your generation went greedy and picked the wrong political leaders. The only people who "ruined" Social Security is the Federal government. Social Security is a tax legally extorted from workers and you have zero claim to any funds paid in.

As for the debt, America was 10 trillion in debt in 2008. Obama has pushed the debt limit and we will be 20 trillion in debt before he leaves office.

A new record considering it took 227 years to accumulate 10 trillion and Barry did it in 8 years.
