I've only been playing a month - us noobs must stick together. I've never played a better game apart from chess, nor one in which new players are treated with such apathy and disdain (with a few honourable exceptions, I should add). Hopefully our whispered conversation in this peaceful morgue will one day help a newbie who is as yet unborn.
SC is based entirely on supply-side economics - consumers have been completely left out of the equation, as have the social and political consequences of rich countries selling their citizens crap. Quality is a poisoned chalice, which goes round and round like pass-the-parcel. In RL, companies bite your hands off for steady local contracts, but in SC they do not pay, for the reason given above. To try and compensate for this, somewhat ineffectual brownie points are awarded instead. More brownie points are given for local than for common. With practice, all contracts can be cancelled and redone in under a minute, so don't worry about that.
