Let's wait and hear from Andy before we conclude that the developers are backing down from what they posted. My hunch is that it is something that will take some programming time and study, and with the holidays, that has slowed things down a bit. It might be something really complicated to pull off depending on how the game code is written.
I do believe that the developers try to make this a good game for all its player types, otherwise, they wouldn't put any energy or time into it.
I will add my opinion though, and hopefully the GMs will listen as an observer and player from past and current.
I first came to Simcountry a little over 10 years ago after a request for more females to play the game. The BEST part of the game was being part of a federation, making long-time friendships, and working together to build economies and to defend/fight in wars, if need be. Raiding inactives was always fun and challenging, because it added a thrill to gain game booty and use it to enhance your empire (country). There was more competition between players as part of federations AND it was a great way to teach players the GAME and to enjoy the full experience.
As with any game, abuses came into play which led to restrictions and war levels. In reality though, if players would join a federation, that gives them a line of protection and help to rebuild should anything happen. AND you can purchase war protection.
I really miss those days.
Simcountry in my observation has become more of a solo game - every player on their own. Where is the absolute fun in that? More competition will grow the game even in war situations. It will get more players talking and posting in the forums. THIS IS IMPORTANT IN RECRUITING NEW PLAYERS TO THE GAME.
I know there are players who prefer a peaceful game and don't want to be bothered, and that is okay. I do, however, think there needs to be an option for players who enjoy warring, politics, etc. There are probably quite a few players in the past who would return if there were no restrictions on war.
As to war levels, they really don't work well in my opinion. It offers restrictions in a couple of areas. 1) Players may choose to always stay under War Level 3 and not be attack-able, but they act as, pardon the term, "asshats," and there is no way to defend against that. I reference a recent player who was doing quite a lot of hostile bidding on another player in the game. 2) Someone at a much higher war level would not even be able to join their federation comrades in battle should the opponent be at a war declaration level, but too low. This doesn't seem fair.
If my observations are not correct, please let me know. I don't understand the full game like some players do.
I strongly encourage my son and Jonni to really think about things and what some of the player base is saying.
