One potential event that could bring more interaction between players is an Olympic Games event. It would appear on the security council page, players then can make a bid on the Olympic Game.
The winner of the bid gets to host the Olympic Game, which will give their country a temporary economic boost as well as a boost to their score due to the prestige.

Countries could invest in their country in a sports team to compete against other countries. If your sports team has a winning season it would increase your countries demand for Cable TV Services, but also give your nation some prestige and boost country score.

Failed Nation States
Have the potential for non president nations governments to fail and become a failed state, which would then become a haven for pirates. Countries that border a failed state would suffer some consequences such as country supplies being stolen, fires damaging factories or towns, factories having supplies stolen, citizens being murdered due to crime.

Security Council Decision to send International Peace Keepers
The Security Council has the ability to propose to send peace keepers into a country that is a failed state in order to establish peace and ultimately establish a stable government.
If the resolution to send peace keepers passes, then countries can then send occupation units into that nation.
