Gen. Wallace (Little Upsilon) | Wednesday, August 27, 2008 - 10:27 am Hurricanes(40~60% Oceans, 10~30% Inlands, -20% Hills ~ -50% Mountains), Tornadoes(20~30% Flatlands, 0% Oceans, -10% Lowlands, -10% Hills ~ -20% Mountains), Earthquakes(20% Hills ~ 40% Mountains, 10~20% Oceans, 0~10% Flatlands), & Floods(40~60% Oceans, 20% Rivers ~ 40% Lakes, 10% lowlands), etc... I think graphic terrain would change the angle at which you would get, for the country you have. E1~If I have a Country next to the ocean with mountains, I would get a 0~10% chance of having a hurricane, a 40~60% chance of having a flood, and a 40~60% chance of having a earthquake. E2~If I have a country inland with small hills and a river, I would have a -20~10% chance of a hurricane, a 20~30% chance of a earthquake, and a 20~30% chance of a flood. E3~If I have low Flatlands and a river, I would have a 10~20% chance of having a Tornado, a 30~40% chance of having a flood, and a 0~10% chance of a earthquake. And so on having each add or subtract from another... If you noticed the 30% chance of flood in the example 3, It got 20% because of the lake/river and 10% for the lowlands... It also only had 20% tornado chance because of the lowlands(-10%)... Notice I did not put inland on example 3, this would be because it is way inland 0% chance of a hurricane Notice in example 2, I added small hills and I put inlands that will give a 10~30% chance of having a hurricane at which a -10% because of the small hills, as well as a 10% inland and a 20% river/lake for a flood... |
Angus88 (Little Upsilon) | Thursday, August 28, 2008 - 01:30 am I like your suggestions. Apart from your very rough % calculations. 30% calculated from what? Each day? Good luck ever growing any country. Terrain, climate and terrain/climate specific specific disasters would be a nice perk. Coding takes time though, and W3C are bombarded with suggestions. If ever implemented. The climate, terrain, and fresh/salt water availability could effect the productivity of various industry sectors. |
Lelouch (Little Upsilon) | Thursday, August 28, 2008 - 04:02 am I want to be able to make EarthQuake/Hurricane resistant housing. |
Stuart Taylor (Little Upsilon) | Thursday, August 28, 2008 - 12:04 pm I want to move my population and corps underground in a 6 foot plated vault, where nothing can get them... |
Gen. Wallace (Little Upsilon) | Thursday, August 28, 2008 - 04:40 pm I was thinking more along the lines of chances and that would be more over a 6 to 12months time period... Oops, guess over the typing and checking and typing and checking and hours doing other things and then some that I left that part out... I was just trying to add more real to it and maybe some of those people that are tired of having earthquakes would have somewhat of a choice next time they pick a country what they might get... And in the real world some people have more of a 60~90% chance of an earthquake or a volcano everyday. |
Kosmic Blues (Little Upsilon) | Thursday, August 28, 2008 - 05:27 pm NO MORE DISASTERS. They do NOT serve a point. edit: The people who are tired of earthquakes aren't tired because they want more variety. They're tired because earthquakes add nothing to the game and only detract from the fun. I defy you to produce one example of how earthquakes make the game better, and "realism" isn't an answer. Realism does not constitute being better. Besides, there's a WHOLE LOT more coding that needs to have been done before they even considered including natural disasters. And I honestly don't think that is the direction W3 wants to take the coding in. This is only a browser based game. You might want to try browsing the shelves at your local computer store for a Maxis game. |

Pathetic Sheep (White Giant) | Sunday, August 31, 2008 - 05:15 am Stone companies in mountains should either produce higher quality stone or use less energy getting it. Coastal countries should have more success with fishing and boat manufacture. Corn grows well in the plains. Oil is somewhat random but countries should either have access to it or not. Adding geographic advantages and disadvantages is a good idea IMO. Fighting to control access to a key resource would add some dynamics to game strategy. |
Gen. Wallace (Little Upsilon) | Sunday, August 31, 2008 - 06:55 pm I agree with the statement just before this one and add that people would fight for a flat earthquakeless country as well, and a risk to take to get that great fishing spot or oil rig up... :D Maybe that great stone market in the earthquake pron mountains... Like in the REAL WORLD... :D |
