| Thursday, January 21, 2016 - 05:05 am I have a Political Science degree. I think I might be able to shed some light on the topic. It is believed that Russia has the most nuclear warheads. However, In the START 1 and SORT treaties it was agreed the nations would mirror each other in amount of warheads held. In the late 80's the nations where expected to have a total of 65,000 warheads combined. That number has since been reduced to about 12,000, each reportedly holding 6,000. Again this is number and we don't know if its entirely true. However, for the sake of argument. Let say Russia does have the largest stockpile. US Foreign policy states that any nuclear weapon when uses defensively must be able to destroy any size city/installation. Often times the largest 5 US city are used as scales. If a weapon can effectively destroy the targets then it is introduced as a nuclear deterrent. Because of this most US missiles are made to be submarine or bomber based to ensure rapid deployment and limited chances of being intercepted. This allows the payloads to be much greater in size and destructive power. Russian forces are almost entirely land based due to its size and need to secure its borders in both Europe and Asia. Due to this fact Russian weapons tend to be in much smaller yields. However, Russians tend to compensate by creative ICBM's that deliver mult-missiles per rocket. In short... Russia has the advantage in terms of superior numbers, but Americans have the advantage in destructive power and rapid deployment.
