Mike C | Thursday, September 9, 2021 - 05:06 pm When I look around I see themes for county names in empires and some that seem to be random. I thought it might be fun to find out how you pick the names you give your countries. When I first started playing I struggled trying to think of some names but my wife is an avid reader and I'm surrounded by books. So I started naming my countries after Dean Koontz novels. This time around I'm using Clive Cussler books. How about you? Any rhyme or reason behind your choices? |
SuperSoldierRCP | Thursday, September 9, 2021 - 06:11 pm For my countries I tried to stick with an astrology theme and choose to use names from cultures all over the world. These include: Arabic, Hebrew, Native American dialects, etc. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Melichor Melchior is a derivative of Hebrew melech 'king', 'light', or 'splendor'. Venison Venison constellation in India. The Rigveda refers to the Orion Constellation as Mriga (The Deer). The Mriga means Deer, locally known as Harnu in folk parlance. Poletaris It comes from a United States Native American language meaning star of the north Oceanica Definitions of Oceanica. a large group of islands in the south Pacific including Melanesia and Micronesia and Polynesia (and sometimes Australasia and the Malay Archipelago). Oceanica in ancient times was a series of stars used in the pacific ocean that allowed reliable navigation. Metalison It comes from a United States Native American language. Metal meaning hard colored earth and Ison is used to say that it is a good thing for someone that the fact that something happened in the past means it will likely happen again. So it roughly means metal happiness or metal wealth. It was used in early times to reference the sun. Altair The name Altair is Arabic in origin and has the same meaning as the name of the constellation Aquila in Latin; that is, they both mean simply eagle. |
E O | Thursday, September 9, 2021 - 06:48 pm Charn - Copy paste from wikipedia: "Charn is a fictional city appearing in the 1955 book The Magician's Nephew, the sixth book published in C. S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia, written as a prequel to The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Charn, and the world of which it is the capital city, are the birthplace of Jadis, also known as the White Witch, who later seizes control of Narnia. When visited briefly by Digory and Polly, the protagonists of the novel, the city is totally deserted, lifeless and crumbling, under a dying sun. Rivers have dried up, and neither weeds nor insects live. All life on the world of Charn had been destroyed by Jadis through an evil magic spell. In the novel, the city stands as an example of the dead end that can result if a civilization succumbs to evil. During their visit, Digory accidentally wakes Jadis from suspended animation, and she is able to leave the world with them." Wake me from my passive slumber and I go Jadis on you. Better to observe from afar and not provoke. |
Matthew II | Thursday, September 9, 2021 - 09:34 pm I just liked the name Batavia. Sounded pompous and Royal to me. Batavia actually existed, but it isn't connected to my Batavia. I've loosely tried to theme my country around the British Empire of the 19th century. Anyone that knows a bit of geography could skim my capital names and get the idea. The British Empire was ruthless, expansionist, aggressive, pragmatic and the global hegemon for more than a century. Plus I really enjoy tea. |

Banedon Runestar | Saturday, September 11, 2021 - 04:44 am The name of the civilization I created for Space Empires 4 and 5. |
The Mentalist | Saturday, September 11, 2021 - 06:25 am My country is in LU and is created by 4 States: Republica Antillana Sabatica: translated from Spanish to English Sabbatical Antillean Republic. I chose this name because my main country is on an island, hence the name Antillana or Antillean. Sabbath refers to the Holy Day of the Lord according to the Bible La Sultana de Oriente: there is a neighborhood in my city called "La Sultana" and it is where my parents lived when they were newly married. East because this country is east of the continent of Antillia Major. San Miguel de Hatuey: San Miguel refers to the Archangel Miguel and Hatuey was the name of a Taino chief who was one of the first to fight against the Spanish conquerors:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hatuey, and I united the two names. The Caiman Islands - the name says it all. I just changed the letter y for the i. Kind regards. |

Tendo Ryu | Sunday, October 17, 2021 - 09:04 am What a fun question. Axis Mundi: I would love to say it was due to it's latin meaning of Earth's Axis but actually it was just the name of the bar I first got drunk when I was a kid. Valerio: My grandfathers name. Avalon & When you look into the Abyss: Countries belonging to the greatest player of all time and my first in-game mentor(Avalon/Esperandus), not seen since maybe 2006/7 (afaik), so i've kept them named the same. Manetheren: Named after the main of my good in-game friend long since departed, iki ryo. Also a land from the Wheel of Time novel. Veritas: Shortened from 'In vino veritas'. Indekkusu: Japanese for Index as I originally used that country with a small population to increase some of the required indexes to reach level 13 without having to bear huge costs in larger countries. The next country I restart from my old empire will be named something after WildEyes- perhaps joint first with Esper as greatest ever player. |

Stu | Wednesday, November 17, 2021 - 03:35 pm Most are names of countries I had when I played years ago. They were named after streets in the neighbourhood where I used to live. I have another couple of additions now though. Lagunastia named after JL who used to lead VS, Windbagistan after a player called Wendy and Jasontia named after a good friend of mine on here who sadly passed away many years ago. |
