One of the highest gaining stocks on US exchanges yesterday was a China-based online game company. It's stock jumped when its quarterly report showed a 30% increase in revenue and a 17% increase in net income.

In US dollars, it reported $147.3 million in quarterly revenues and $70.2 million in quarterly net income.

Online games are becoming an important market. Some players spend more time playing games than watching TV. (For example, me.) Online games often are more thought-provoking and entertaining than TV.

I predict that they will take some market share away from TV and game consoles. That means more opportunities for online game programmers, players, and investors.

That company in Beijing now has cash reserves of $464.9 million and a market value of $1.24 billion. Dollars.

It started business in 2003, not long after Simcountry.

Absolutely. it was invented by the CIA in conjunction with the Illuminati, and bankrolled by the Freemasons and the Federal Reserve (which is neither Federal nor a Reserve). Computer experts from the NSA worked with the aliens stashed at Area 51 to write the software, and the mind-control experts from MK-ULTRA helped with the content. Why else do you think the game is so addictive? The FBI, Interpol, Mossad, MI6, and the NKVD (formerly the KGB, which was formerly the NKVD) are collating the results to present at a secret meeting of the U.N. held at the Bohemian Grove.

The Windows 8 App Store is going to be a big deal in the game industry.

Windows Phone 8 comes out in September and Windows 8 comes out in October.

Then developers will get a chance to sell their stuff in the brand new Windows 8 App Store. In exchange for giving Microsoft 20-30% of sales, developers will get access to all Windows 8 users.

That's probably the biggest customer base in the world. By comparison, Microsoft has sold about 500 million Windows 7 licenses.

That App Store deal is a huge incentive for developers of the next generation of games. I think it's going to be a gold rush.

Possibly; I bought some stock in a china-based game company whose main focus was on cell-phone-based games. You'd think with hundreds of millions of cell phones in china and the surrounding environs that it would be a decent investment. However, 18 months later, the stock has lost 89% of its value.
Being windows-based seems like a great market, tho, too...

Maclean I little more research should probably have been done. Apple leads profits and samsung leads market share and all other smart phone companies are hemoraghing losses in the market. Then if you look at the corresponding diplomatic and political environments regarding it. China hates Apple, for nearly a million exploited citizens, and Samsung is based in S.K. which is an incredibly strong nationalized country. And so S.K. who hates China will try to exploit Chinese compaanies and corporations follow suit. And chinese companies try to screw over Apple and lead to Apple not wanting to do much business makes the siituation a little tougher. They don't even have Free Trade. India has free trade with all of asia but there are some big hostilities between certain forces. But money trumps all in the end. But the competition is just so huge raw deals are to be expected.

I'd like to see a lot more people here, if they did focus moreso on profits then they can probably afford to advertise a bit more. =( and make quicker updates/upgrades

I agree, I could have and should have done more research on this one. But it was a penny stock (actually, 15 cents/ share) so I took a quick gamble on it. I guess the rule might be, follow the politics, but follow the money first...

With Chinese stocks, it's helps to see who the auditor is. Some investors only buy stocks of companies in poorly regulated countries, like China, if they're audited by one of the biggest international auditors.

The big 4 auditors don't want to be sued for missing anything fraudulent. So they have the strictest standards. The big 4 auditors are PWC, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, Ernst & Young, KPMG.

Several Chinese game companies are audited by one of the big 4, including the company I mentioned. And penny stock companies usually don't bother getting audited.

The scandal about SimCity is entertaining.

The developers spent 10 years preparing the new version. It requires user accounts to be connected to the internet 24 hours of the day. A lot of users can't do that, and it causes massive lag anyway. Huge complaints.

A few hundred thousand players probably will drop SimCity and come to Simcountry.

Did everyone hear the news about the game company called Valve?

A few years ago Valve hired someone to be its in-house economist to oversee its virtual item economy. So far, the company has payed $57 million to its players who have created virtual items.

Recently that economist, Yanis Varoufakis, became Greece's new minister of finance. Then Valve's online community reached a record 8.5 million simultaneous users.

So now we know the formula to increase Simcountry's players.

First we hire an in-house economist to improve Simcountry's economic simulation. Then in a few years he'll become chancellor of the exchequer or secretary of the treasury of a real country. As a result, the number of Simcountry's active players will skyrocket, probably to millions.

First of all, Greece isn't a real country.

Secondly, this clown will not be a Finance Minister for more than one or two months.

Suppose a game company creates simulations of the real world. Suppose its developers very actively keep improving and expanding the simulations, year after year since its founding in 1999. Would it be successful?

Paradox Interactive of Sweden creates simulations that many gamers regard as the best strategy games. Paradox's developers try to make them historically realistic, which makes their games feel a bit like time travelling.

Over the years, I've played their ancient themed Europa Universalis Rome, their early modern themed Europa Universalis IV, and currently their medieval themed Crusader Kings II. They have 20th century simulations too. Depending on the game, there are dozens or hundreds of historical territories and countries from which a player chooses one to play.

For example, I'm currently playing their historical simulation of Charlemagne, the first Frankish emperor.

Paradox had sales of $71 million last year, and has 3.5 million players. Recently it has caused a stir by announcing that it's planning an IPO. Public companies with that much sales typically have a market value of roughly between $125 million and $220 million.

It's nice that game developers who work hard to develop simulations can get rich, right?

Mount and Blade Warband was the only game that could get me to fully quit WoW. Have 1113 Hours logged into my steam account for Mount and Blade Warband and still going strong. Cant wait until Mount&Blade II: Bannerlord comes out! Its going to be epic. And Madoff, is Paradox being bought by someone? Cause I love their games have 1162 hours logged into Crusader Kings II, and 910 Hours logged into Europa Universalis IV.

Paradox will do the buying. The IPO will give it some walking around money to buy other game companies and publishing rights. Last year Paradox bought a small game developer called White Wolf Publishing, which has videogames about vampires and werewolves.

They're on the lookout for more acquisitions. So if anyone hears of any game they could buy and improve, send them the tip. Ahem.

Oddly, White Wolf used to be owned by a company whose game I played obsessively several years ago. I guess they sold it once they realized that they weren't going to conquer the gaming world like they dreamed of.
