rep (Little Upsilon) | Monday, June 20, 2011 - 05:18 am I run my own Investment Fund for my country (auto turned off). I keep having a strange occurrence and am wondering whether anyone else has experienced this. Every so often it seems that the game is sneaking in corps to my IF. The REALLY strange thing is when it does it it's always a group with the same CEO. First let me say that I always buy in round lots (except with my CEO corps), and this is what made it catch my eye. Examples: A game year or two after I started, I suddenly noticed I had 6 corps I didn't have the month before, all with "Marine". Marine Aluminum, etc. Nothing personal against whoever that is, but none of the corps met my criteria for investment, I didn't want them. Two of them took a decade to unload. Same thing a while later, this time all "Z" corps. I went from having two to having 15 of them. Some of the new ones met my criteria, but most of them didn't, and I'm still trying to unload the ones I didn't want. This last month (August 2804 LU) it happened again. I suddenly had 31,250 shares of four different ZZO (or maybe it was ZZL) corps, once more not meeting my investment criteria. As I mentioned, I buy in round lots, and never buy less than one million shares. Ever. And yes, I understand that with share splits and so on the numbers don't always stay round. This is not the case in these situations; I check and adjust my IF monthly, I am reasonably certain what should and should not be there. Is this something that has happened to anyone else? Or do I need to check into the section 8 ward of the local hospital? As always, thanks. |
trout (Little Upsilon) | Monday, June 20, 2011 - 12:57 pm The 'marine' labelled ones are mine. There's a good chance with the six you saw that I had picked them up from 'Gamemaster Corporations', renamed them and retasked them for my own purposes, causing them to be unprofitable for a while. Re-naming may be the cause of them seeming to appear. For the odd numbers of shares, I don't know how that might come about, but I have noticed that if you issue new shares and then retract the offer, the amount of shares still shows up on the "supply" list on the share market. I haven't found it possible to buy those shares but if there were a way, then the total number of shares would rise above 100% (lets say 103%) and the game might rescale everyone's holdings by 100/103 to bring everything back into line. This is pure speculation though. |
rep | Monday, June 20, 2011 - 04:18 pm Trout, Thanks for the input. I too considered the possibility of purchase/renames, and it really didn't have any effect on my ops, so didn't pay too much mind to it. This last one is the one that got me. All four of the corps were "Off Air to Air Missile" corps, and I invest by industry. Cutting this short, I positively did not own these extra four Air to Air corps. Strange. Interesting take on the rescale. I have also noticed that an issue/retraction still shows, and have wondered about that. Thanks again for your input, and I didn't mean anything personal. My IF portfolio is "Blue Chip"; my standards for investing are high. |
trout (Little Upsilon) | Monday, June 20, 2011 - 07:12 pm No offense taken rep. I did a little test with offered/withdrawn shares in a corp I own whose shares I have in another investment fund (I too turn off the auto function). I wasn't able to buy the offered shares that shouldn't have been there and they were removed at the month end - I kept a note of the shareholders and holdings to ensure that the extras weren't randomly assigned to anyone. The percentages and actual numbers of shares were all fine. If there is a bug to be found here, it's buried deeper than my investigations. Not sure whether you're lucky (got free shares, even if they took a while to sell) or unlucky (paid for dodgy shares) on this one. I'll keep an eye on my investment funds but I haven't seen any such behaviour in them yet. |
rep | Tuesday, June 21, 2011 - 04:18 pm Thanks Trout. I sense a theme here. Screen name Trout. CEO Marine. Hmmm... I have a vague memory of a poster from a while ago that had the same thing happen. With the pace of things in the game it's easy to think something's off when maybe it isn't. Thanks for your test results, we've eliminated one possibility. |
Jo Salkilld (Golden Rainbow) | Tuesday, June 21, 2011 - 09:57 pm Rep, I hate to bust your theory, but trout are freshwater fish ... Hugs and respect Jo |
