i'm bored. thought i'd see if anyone wants a tip. the most basic boxing move is to throw your left out. up in the air or anywhere, then follow with the right. against a nobody, if you put your weight in that right, most times, it's lights out. of course, you might break his jaw. that's when you practice the RUN LIKE HELL stategy.

I'm bored too. I'll add to your tip.

When fighting your opponent, always remain cool. Don't let temper/emotion get involved as you will lose focus and lose any advantage. You become sloppy. Always look your opponent in the eye. Their eyes will always tell you what their next move will be.

Oh, Erik, are you taking notes here? You da boxer!!! :-)

Tip #1 in hand to hand combat:

The guy with gun wins.

Linebacker is correct. but if you don't have a gun and you can't run and you have short arms like me, you might try this. rush your opponent with sissy slaps at his hands so he can't get started, get inside, grab him around the waste, lift (it won't get him off the ground, but will unbalance him, then take your right leg and reap the outside of his right leg to the rear and smash his head into the concrete. that's just one way and this method is a bit crude but it works.
(this comes from a fourth degree black belt in judo).

for women the best weapon, other than the aforementioned gun is a ball point pen to the eye socket. be sure that when you thrust, it goes squish.

What if ur opponent is a girl? Then that wouldn't work.

Parsifal, actually a woman's best weapon is her stilleto shoe.

The weakest point on the human anatomy is the soft tissue at the throat, at the adam's apple on a man.

Nothing fancy required. Straight closed fist jab to the adam's apple. At the minimum, the target is temporarily stunned and unable to breathe. At best, the larnyx is fractured, causing blood to fill the lungs, resulting in death within several minutes.

nuts and stilletos are okay, if you can get to the nuts or reach down to get the stilleto (assuming you're not wearing flats) the same holds true for ball point pens. no pen? use your index finger as a sword and drive it hard. adams apple is good, again, you've got to get to it. that's why we fall back on guns. lol

and if you have a gun, learn how to use it. in Texas you have to have a carry permit and take a course, etc. we're about to pass a law to allow faculty and students to carry guns on college campuses. what do you think of that?

hehe--this should get somebody's juices flowing. what about you Scarlet. care to join the discussion on campus weapons?

Yeah, you are right about the 'learn how to use it'. Also need to know that you CAN use it. A prosecutor friend and I were talking one day about guns. He told me, Lorelei (not really my name ha ha ha), unless you are prepared to pull the trigger, do not own one. Otherwise, the gun becomes a weapon to be used by your aggressor against you. Pfft, someone messin' wif me and mine, I would have no problem pulling the trigger. But, a very good point, my friend made.

OMG - hope you don't live anywhere near a college campus. :S Could become quite chaotic, given today's society lol I'm a strong supporter of a person's right to own a firearm. I think everyone has the right to defend themselves. Make owning a gun illegal? Well, bad guy will still carry them. Good guy will abide by the law and stop carrying them. Then how does one defend????
It takes us back to da stilleto.

Stilettos are rubbish and make it impossible to run. Wear flats and use your legs, then people who only use their arms can't get near you. I took a boxer out with that method because I knew my kicks and he only knew how to punch.

Well-placed kicks can also disarm a knife-wielder and, if you know the stick wrap technique you can take a guy who's trying to use one.

The only thing you can't fight against hand-to-hand are guns, but then they are banned in the UK so no one ever uses them. Ever.

Yeah ... right!

there is a Kata in Judo that is primarily for self defense. things like knife take aways, etc. but there's one move that's a gun take away, where the guy has a gun on your back and you're supposed to take it away. haha. we all agreed that the Japanese were a bit dillusional thinking that would work. course, they don't have many guns there either.

anything that's in the realm of self defense has to be second nature to you, so deciding you're going to defend yourself with most of the aforementioned techniques without having worked out for at least a year is pretty ludicrous. the best thing to do is not to put yourself in situations where you are vulnerable.

i'm still waiting on some comments about campus guns. anybody?

I heard something interesting today, from this guy I know that was in the Navy Seals. If you take your two forefingers and push them just beneath the ears in that hollowed point between the bone and lift ur opponent off the ground that way, it will totally incapaciatate them. Now herein lies the question...what if your opponent is way bigger than you???

Parsifal ... you're absolutely right. The first technique of self defence is to run away. The other techniques are only useful if the first option is not available ...

Lorelei ... contrary to popular perception, with the right techniques size really doesn't matter ;)

You know, Jo, you are right. When I took Tae Kwon Do, my master instructor was one of the best fighters in his art and he was a lil bitty thing for a man. But here is another tip for a fighter:

1. Never use what you learn to go out and pick a fight. Use your art skill merely to self defend. No one likes a bully, and a bully is never respected, and really not even feared. Just looked down upon.

Ive never lost a fight. Raised as a mil-brat my dad always said " Boy you better not throw that first punch but you sure as HELL BETTER FINISH IT" so i made sure i never lost.

Fighting is 40% knowing how to fight, 40% knowing your opponent, then that little bit of luck as the remainder. Just remember

One who bleeds less wins, when all else fails make sure he knows that if your going down - hes in for one HELL OF A FIGHT!!!

i took Judo for 35 years and was never in a fight. but over the years i had internalized a lot that i wouldn't have learned otherwise. ex. no matter has weak you are, you have strengths and not matter how strong you are you have weaknesses.

i now just do Tai Chi. lots of lessons there too.

Lorelei and Parsifal, those are wise words.

If I had to pick one martial art, it would be karate. With karate you can't attack someone who is backing off. It requires the opponent to stand and fight before you can attack them. To make the most of karate, and many other martial arts, you are also required to learn the philosophy behind the discipline. It's all about working with the flow, rather than struggling against it. If someone does not wish to attack you, why would you want to change that?

OTOH, if someone wants to punch at you ... help them. Accept their forward energy, step away from blocking it and, with a gentle stroke, help them to unbalance themselves.

Judo works in much the same way ...

The greatest lessons taught by martial arts are discipline and self control. Two very important things that not only help in a situation where self defense is necessary, but something that is beneficial in every facet of our lives. I would be wise to go back and reflect on these, as sometimes I lose focus.

Texas is proposing legislation to allow students and faculty to carry legal concealed firearms in hopes of avoiding VA Tech style rampages.

At first glance you say no, but I'm in agreement. I'd rather hope someone else around has a gun other than the madman. These acts are so random and unpredictable the police cannot deter this kind of behavior. I'd like to see a few guns on campus instead of having public places become shooting galleries.

The 2nd Amendment issue was settled last year by the US Supreme Court in McDonald vs City of Chicago.

At issue was "whether the Second Amendment is incorporated into the Due Process Clause or the Privileges or Immunities Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment so as to be applicable to the States, thereby invalidating ordinances prohibiting possession of handguns in the home."

The court ruled that the 2nd Amendment was incorporated by the 14th Amendment.
Therefore the Right to Kepp and Bear Arms is now a Constitutionally protected civil right just like freedom of speech and freedom of religion.

It will take awhile as local governments will inevitably test the ruling by attemting to enforce current laws and ordinances that are now technically unconstitutional. However, eventually much wider freedoms for the possession and carrying of firearms will prevail.

Likely, Congress will attempt to reetablish some controls through carefully worded legislation and use of other natioal security or interstate commerce powers to back-door some gun control measures.

Don't look for the NRA or other groups to be heralding this landmark victory for gun rights. After all, if your rights are now Constitutionally guaranteed, why send money to them?

On self defense in general, there are two circumstances in which a mature adult will find themselves:

one in which they can walk away, or one in which they must kill to protect themselves.

Everything else is so much macho BS.

really didn't know if i wanted to add to this, but what the heck. that throat jab mentioned can actually kill if proper force is used. i've sent many to hospital with moderate jab. kicks to groin are often missed which only gives other person reason to hurt you. guns are nice to have. but if you keep on the move, you become harder target to hit. always size up weapon. small 22 or 25 won't do much damage unless between eyes. also size up other person. look for week points. fat gut, slim legs. etc. more than anything, remember that the dark is you best friend. they can't see any better than you.

What would you do?

You are coming out of the grocery, bag in one arm fumbling with keys in the other hand to unlock the car, when someone comes up from behind, pokes a gun into your side and says, get in the car. Do you fight then, or do as instructed?

regardless of the downside, i don't think i would get in the car. if i had the presence of mind, i would think about which hand the gun was in, probably right, and whether it was in my ribs or back. i would then quickly pivot around trying to be on the outside of the gun and throw the groceries at him and then i would either run or do O Soto Gari(outide leg reap). actually the grocery bag is some protection and throwing it at him creates a diversion. getting in the car with him is a death sentence and i wouldn't do that under any circumstance.

the more prudent way would be to tell him that i'd give him my wallet but that i wouldn't get in the car with him. my guess is that if we argued long enough he'd pistol whip me and run.

Go willingly up to the car, then suddenly drop the groceries, run as fast as you can jinking left and right. Take cover behind every possible car, but only for a second or two. Never run out from behind the car in a patter, and get inside as quickly as possible. Even if you are shot, someone will still hear it and will call 911, but if you get in the car, no one will know you are gone for a while.
