Hi there.

I'm not an archaeologist, but i studied classics and had a few friends that did Archaeology modules. As with most subjects, it needs a good teacher to bring it alive, but you can't really plan for that! The people who studied it seemed to enjoy it anyway.

From what they told me, and from what i saw in the taster course, studying Archaeology involves being taught how to decipher the origin, story and history of artifacts, and then being able to relate that back to your wider knowledge of history.

So, e.g. you would be taught how to recognise one type of pottery from another, whether it had burn marks, analyse it's location and condition, and then try to piece facts and subsequently historical evidence together. You would also be taught the process of archaeological digs - how they are done, examples of them in the past, and pretty much everything you'd ever need to know to join a team (usually at a university) and be sent to digs across the country to help and attempt to discover what the history of each site was.

In England we have quite a good tv programme - it's not terribly professional, but it gives a decent idea of what it's like. So try searching for 'Time Team' on youtube or the one of those sites.

Hope this helps.

I was thinking of archaeology just today, while trying to read the game docs. As a prospective student of Historic Turning Points, I offer you what I will now (probably at length) argue may be the most outdated sentence ever included in software documentation, and do it without offending anyone! (Except liberals, who know in their hearts they don't count.)

(from the FAQ, section: "Is it bad when they [CEOs] takeover [sic] some of the corporations in my country?")

"In general it is not bad at all. If you make sure your corporations are well developed, other players will have to pay a lot of money for them. The corporations remain in your country and they provide many jobs. They also pay taxes. General Motors in [sic] not owned by the US government but it employs many people and it pays taxes to the government."

Any literate person alive today will have noticed which of the five sentences is a wee bit off. Unless they are currently enrolled in a really expensive college, I guess.

Human history is best divided into stages by two major developments, namely alcohol (which those of you in really expensive colleges will learn all about) and freedom (which you will not). Those in Archaeolgy curricula will have professors trying to toss in things like monotheism and bronze, but those are really side issues. Alcohol I will not be covering here, as even those of us not in expensive colleges can learn all about that fairly easily.

Freedom was invented by crazy Italians in the 16th century AD (CE for those of you in the Archaeology Departments of really expensive universities), lied about by indolent Frenchmen in the 17th and 18th centuries, fought about by practical Englishmen in the last quarter of the 18th century, and fatally poisoned by one John Marshall in the first quarter of the 19th century. Its death took some time, and is in fact still ongoing, but the date that will likely be put on its tombstone is a date not long past, when the Iconic Corporation of Mankind's Last Best Hope died not with a bang, or even a whimper, but by accepting a loan. So be careful spending your money, because when you go into a negative cash situation hoping for the World Bank to step in at 15%, you just might discover to your horror that you've gotten a loan at 30% from "Thin End of the Wedge BO Finance"!

But seriously, enjoy your Archaeology. It may be mostly going through dead peoples' rubbish, but who doesn't like doing that?

If you enjoyed this, please refer me to a good LU federation in need of an opinionated roleplaying clown. If you don't want to hear from me again, please refer me to a good LU federation in need of an opinionated roleplaying clown who can tailor his message to an audience that doesn't have to include you.

And really, does May 31st have to be 4 hours long every night? Do we have no eastern hemisphere players? I know I'm (ahem) different, but surely a few of the rest of you get insomnia sometimes, too? Think of all the time wasted by 4000-odd different Presidents and CEOs reading this and weep!

History? That's a foggy issue to say the least. It's much like The Matrix...
